Facilitating Leadership and Group Skills (FLAGS) Facilitator Position Description

Facilitator: A facilitator is "one who helps others learn or who helps make things easy." Facilitators are an integral part of the Military Spouse and Family Studies Program (MSFP) FLAGS Workshop. FLAGS prepares spouse leaders to facilitate leadership and group cohesion in future roles, whether they be professional or volunteer. Facilitators deliver graduate-level leadership development content to their peers who participate in the FLAGS Workshop, which prepares spouse leaders to facilitate leadership and group cohesion in future roles, whether they be professional or volunteer. The goal is to encourage participants to think productively and ultimately to articulate key ideas, to ask vital questions, to uncover variables, to find solutions, and/or to identify productive actions. The facilitator may or may not be a content expert. They lead experiential learning activities, guide conversations and synthesize group ideas, effectively shaping experiences for the participants. Facilitators learn and practice skills ranging from emotional intelligence, public speaking, critical thinking, and flexibility!

 
 
 

Three Dimensions of the Facilitator's Role:

  1. To help the group move toward specified goals or outcomes
  2. To initiate, sustain, and assess a group process that is efficient and collaborative
  3. To involve all participants and reaffirm their contributions

General Requirements and Qualifications for FLAGS Facilitators:

  1. Mandatory attendance and active participation in all FLAGS Facilitator trainings and meetings.
    1. Availability to facilitate up to three peer-to-peer FLAGS Workshops during AY 2022.
  2. Mandatory attendance and active participation in all team-specific requirements as outlined below.
  3. High level of self-awareness, transparency and energy
  4. A passion for and a willingness to learn about group and leadership development.
  5. Ability to work effectively in teams.

General Responsibilities:

  1. After Action Reviews- Attend and actively participate in daily- and end-of-workshop after action reviews with team and MSFP staff
  2. Marketing- Actively share marketing materials over email, social media and in person to enhance recruitment efforts
  3. Commitment to Development- To achieve personal goals for the Academic Year; support and maintain one-on-one relationships with core team members for leadership developmental efforts.
  4. Embrace Feedback- Seek out constructive feedback from fellow facilitators and staff; actively provide constructive feedback to team members. Be open to challenge, focused on personal and professional development and responsive to coaching.
  5. Curriculum Delivery- Study and practice to ensure curriculum fidelity by facilitating the curriculum as designed.
  6. Commitment Duration- All facilitators are asked to commit to the mandatory training and the facilitation of up to three peer facilitation workshop during the academic year. Option to return for following academic year if in the local area.

The FLAGS Workshop is a peer-to-peer four-day workshop offered up to three times each academic year. The workshop is designed to develop a participant's self-awareness and sense of leadership efficacy. Facilitators will lead the FLAGS curriculum, through experiential learning activities (small group and individual) and discussions on topics such as emotional intelligence, communication, resilience, leadership and influence

Those individuals who are selected through the application and interview process will receive all training and materials from the Military Spouse and Family Studies Program (MSFP) Office.
