Carlisle Barracks hosts virtual Retiree Appreciation Day

CARLISLE BARRACKS, Pa (Oct. 20, 2020) – The Carlisle Barracks retiree community had an opportunity to safely attend retirement-related briefings, ask questions, and hear answers in real-time during the Barracks' first-ever Virtual Retiree Appreciation Day. The day's presentations included a welcome by Army War College Commandant, Maj. Gen. Stephen J. Maranian and Carlisle Barracks Garrison Commander, Lt. Col. Courtney Short, as well as medical, legal, Tricare, dental, and vision briefings.

The Barracks held its 46th annual show of thanks and support for military retirees, family members, survivors, and pre-retiree personnel online on Oct. 17.

"Retiree Appreciation Day is a special opportunity for us to particularly say thank you," said Lt. Col. Short.

"This does not look like any Retiree Appreciation Day you've seen before, but we are very glad and happy we are able to offer something to you, and we hope this does meet what you need in terms of information, and a way to connect with us, and a way that we can do so safely," Short said.

Questions from the online audience included:

Q: Does the Dunham Army Health Clinic's Optometry Department schedule eye appointments for retirees?
A: Optometry does not schedule eye appointments for retirees. They only schedule appointments for active-duty military and their family members.

Q: Is there a cost associated with preparing a will?
A: If you are eligible to receive the Legal Service at Carlisle Barracks, there is no cost associated with preparing a will.

Retirees can still accomplish many of the in-person activities typically conducted during the Annual Retiree Appreciation Day, such as health screenings, flu shots, and legal services, by scheduling an appointment with the installation's providers.
