Carlisle Barracks, Pa. (June 25, 2019) – Army Lt. Col. Courtney A. Short assumed command of U.S. Army Garrison Carlisle Barracks from Lt. Col. Sally C. Hannan during a change-of-command ceremony Friday, June 28, at 9 a.m. here at the Wheelock Bandstand on the historic parade field.
Short, a native of Eagan, Minn., most recently served as a speechwriter for the commanding general of U.S. Army Forces Command. She began her career with 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Battalion at Suwon Air Base in South Korea.
Throughout her career she has served as an Executive Officer and Assistant Operations Officer with 2nd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Battalion in Fort Bliss, Texas, and was assigned to the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade. She commanded Alpha Battery in 3rd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery Battalion, and following command served as a small group instructor at the Air Defense Artillery Officer Basic Course. Short was an Assistant Professor in the History Department at the United States Military Academy and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division “Task Force Bulldog.” She served as a Liaison Officer in Korea with the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command and was an Assistant Professor and the Deputy Department Head of the Department of History at the United States Air Force Academy.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Columbia University and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in History from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is a graduate of the Air Defense basic and advanced courses and the Command and General Staff College.
Garrison commanders on Carlisle Barracks provide “city-manager” support for an installation that provides security, safety, and base operations for the mission activities of the Army War College and other organizations, as well as to residents living on post, military retirees, the surrounding military community and a dedicated and professional workforce.
Hannan came to Carlisle from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. where she served as the Deputy Commanding Officer for the 1st Engineer Brigade.
Throughout her career, she served as the Engineer Doctrine Chief, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, the Deputy District Engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District, Hawaii and as a Project Manager for a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS). Hannan commanded the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Signal Brigade in Mannheim, Germany, followed by command of the 18th Engineer Brigade Rear Detachment during their deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Following command, she served as the U.S. Army Engineer School, Operations Officer.
Hannan holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the United States Military Academy, West Point, and a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology. She graduated from the Engineer basic and advanced courses and the Command and General Staff College.
Vincent E. Grewatz, Director, U.S. Army Installation Management Command-Training, officiated the change-of-command ceremony.
