It is the background information on the war, its causes, Union and Confederate national and military objectives, and the critical thinking that underpinned their approaches to fighting the war. It also includes insights on key personalities and builds on the events leading to the Battle of Gettysburg. A prerequisite for a staff ride is some study to determine facts. This video is part of that pre-study so that once on the battlefield, students can establish cause and effect and provide analysis.

Dr. Jones is Professor of Security Studies at the U.S. Army War College and holds the General George C. Marshall Chair of Military Studies at the Army War College. He served in several high-level positions of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations Policy and Support, and principal Director for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Assistance.
Dr. Bolan is a Professor of Middle East Security Studies at the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College. Researches and teaches graduate-level courses on contemporary national security issues and the Middle East. Six years as senior foreign policy advisor and analyst on Middle Eastern and South Asian affairs for Vice Presidents Gore and Cheney.
Mass migration and its associated problems have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit; it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s. These parties are invariably illiberal, anti-American, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin, making their rise a matter of grave concern for the national security interests of the United States.
Dr. Ellis, research professor of Latin American Studies at the Army War College Strategic Studies Institute, focuses his research on Latin American’s relationships with China and other non-Western Hemisphere actors. He has published more than 180 works, including the 2009 book, “China in Latin America: The Whats and Wherefores,” the 2013 book, “The Strategic Dimension of Chinese Engagement with Latin America,” and the 2014 book, “China on the Ground in Latin America.”

The Distance Class of 2018 celebrated completion of two years of Army War College studies, earning the master’s degree in Strategic Studies, June 27, 2018.
On this day in 1901, then Secretary of War Elihu Root established the Army War College to educate senior military officers. Root anticipated an educational institution that could be a catalyst for educating, planning and preparing senior military officers to be strategic-minded and leaders of change.
Each year on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor survivors, veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. The Army War College honored a distinguished member of the Class of 2015 today with an induction into the International Fellows Hall of Fame Oct 18. Major General Eirik Kristoffersen assumed the duty as the Chief of the Norwegian Army in August of 2019 after most recently served as the Chief of the Norwegian Home Guard. He becomes the 69th International Fellow to receive the honor.

The Army War College gathered to honor a most distinguished member of the Class of 2012 Gen. Wayne D. Eyre with an induction into the International Fellows Hall of Fame on Nov 4 in Carlisle’s Bliss Hall. Eyre assumed the duty as the Chief of the Canadian Defence Staff on Nov 25, 2021, after most recently serving as the Commander Canadian Army. He is the 72nd graduate of the war college to receive the International Fellow honor.

On this day in 1901, then Secretary of War Elihu Root established the Army War College to educate senior military officers. Root anticipated an educational institution that could be a catalyst for educating, planning and preparing senior military officers to be strategic-minded and leaders of change.

The Army War College honored a distinguished member of the Class of 2015 today with an induction into the International Fellows Hall of Fame Oct 18. Major General Eirik Kristoffersen assumed the duty as the Chief of the Norwegian Army in August of 2019 after most recently served as the Chief of the Norwegian Home Guard. He becomes the 69th International Fellow to receive the honor.

The Army War College gathered to honor a most distinguished member of the Class of 2012 Gen. Wayne D. Eyre with an induction into the International Fellows Hall of Fame on Nov 4 in Carlisle’s Bliss Hall. Eyre assumed the duty as the Chief of the Canadian Defence Staff on Nov 25, 2021, after most recently serving as the Commander Canadian Army. He is the 72nd graduate of the war college to receive the International Fellow honor.
